Outer Reef Surf School

Pupils from Pembroke and Greenhill schools have been congratulated for their surfing success at an action-packed 5×60 Surf Club Presentation evening.

More than 170 people attended the evening at Greenhill School on Monday, which celebrated the accomplishments of the 5×60 After School Surf Clubs and showed what they have achieved over the last two terms.

Junior Surf Scheme certificates and surf goody bags from Outer Reef Surf School were presented to 150 pupils, and a short film was screened to demonstrate the clubs’ achievements.

Pupils had a chance to go on an indoor surf simulator and compete in a RNLI challenge to see who could put on drysuits and oilskins the quickest, with Tenby surf shop ‘Underground’ donating prizes to the fastest pupils.

The junior surfers also enjoyed looking around stalls from Tenby Lifeboat Station, Tenby beach lifeguards, Surfers against Sewage, Underground and Outer Reef Surf School.

The evening was organised by Wyndham Williams from Sport Pembrokeshire, who also set up the 5×60 After School Surf Clubs at Greenhill and Pembroke two years ago after pupils showed a keen interest in surfing.

“It’s been made possible with the support of Dean Gough from Outer Reef Surf School, and the clubs have really gone from strength to strength over the last two years,” said Wyndham.

Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services, Sports, Leisure and Tourism, added: “The surf clubs take advantage of the fantastic blue flag beaches that Pembrokeshire has to offer and their popularity is a great way to engage pupils in physical activity.”

Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council – the 5×60 project aims to encourage more secondary school children to take part in extra-curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.

OUTER REEF SURF CLUB WEST WALES

The 5x60 Surf Clubs at Greenhill and Pembroke met up at the Tenby school for a joint presentation evening.

Over the last two terms, 120 pupils from the two schools have taken part in a six week after-school junior surf programme run in conjunction with the Outer reef surf school.

Parents and pupils were treated to a short video of their new found skills before Jo Dennison - this year's British Womens'Surf Champion - presented certificates to all those who took part.

Special mention was made of Greenhill's Kirk Lester, who achieved level 4 of the junior surf scheme in just over two years. Next year the youngster plans to undertake a sponsored surf competition to raise money for the Welsh Air Ambulance Service and RNLI.

Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - the 5x60 project aims to encourage more secondary school children to take part in extra-curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.

Beach Safety For This Summer in Pembrokeshire & Wales

10 COMMANDMENTS OF BEACH SAFETY FOR THIS SUMMER 2009

· Always swim or surf at a beach patrolled by lifesavers or lifeguards

· Swim between the red and yellow flags. They mark the safest areas to swim

· Avoid swimming alone or unsupervised

· Read the signs. If a beach is closed, don't swim there

· If you are unsure of the surf conditions ask a lifeguard or lifesaver

· Don't swim directly after a meal

· Don't swim under the influence of alcohol

· Don't run or dive into the water before checking the conditions

· Float with a rip current or undertow, don't swim against it

· If you get into trouble in the water, don't panic, raise one arm, call for help and float until assistance arrives

These flags are used by lifeguards when on duty to denote the different areas of the water that are to be used by swimmers and those using surf boards or surf craft:

Red & Yellow Flags indicates a patrolled bathing area

Black & White Flags indicate a surfboard and craft zone, not a safe place to swim

Red Flags indicate that the beach is ‘closed’ and you should not enter the water

SLSA OF GB

Outer Reef is a Approved Training Centre For The SLSA

Surf Life Saving originated in Australia in the early 1900s, when the growth of seaside towns and interest in swimming led to a number of drownings. Patrols were formed by local residents, living close by beaches with strong currents, alerting people to the dangers of the surf.

The Surf Life Saving Association of Great Britain (SLSGB) was formed in 1955. Volunteer clubs patrolled beaches at Bude and St Agnes in Cornwall and Brighton & WAles, their aim to protect, rescue and resuscitate bathers.

There are now 60+ Surf Life Saving Clubs affiliated to the Association, with thousands of members aged from 7 – 70 years though out the UK & Wales.

During the last 50 years well over 20,000 rescues have been made on our beaches by lifeguards, most of whom have come from the volunteer ranks of the Surf Life Saving Clubs where they learn their patrolling and rescue skills.

History of Surfing

History of Surfing

The Early Days
Surfing 18th century Hawaiian style

It is now widely accepted that the origins of surfing lie in the Pacific Basin, possibly in the group of islands collectively known as Polynesia. Surfing probably started by accident, by fishermen, as a means to bring their boats the last few hundred metres to shore. Today this is still the case in many parts of the World.

Regardless of exactly where the first waves were ridden it was in Hawaii that surfing flourished, helped by the combination of warm climate and consistent, good surf.

Certainly surfing was reported to be widespread by the English seaman and explorer Captain James Cook when he landed in Hawaii in 1777.

Surfing continued to flourish for many years until the arrival of Christian missionaries in the islands almost spelt disaster for the sport.

The missionaries dissuaded people from surfing which they regarded as a Pagan ritual. As a result of this and the loss of many of the native population from "Western" diseases, by the middle of the 19th century there were few surfers left in Hawaii. This was soon to change as in the early 1900's surfing once again grew in popularity and was "exported" to other countries. From Hawaii the sport was “exported” first to California and then in 1915 an Hawaiian Olympic swimming champion, Duke Kahanamoku, introduced surfing to Australia. The sport gradually grew in these and other countries and in the 1940's and 50's spread to Europe, S America and elsewhere, often by American and Australian servicemen stationed overseas during World War Two.

Original surfboards were made from solid wood and were extremely heavy, difficult to carry and hard to handle in the surf. The development of lighter, hollow surfboards made the sport more accessible to more people and greatly improved the performance of the boards. The next quantum leap in design was the addition of a fin or skeg which allowed the rider to turn and control their board and this ushered in a new era of performance surfing.

The Modern Era

The Worldwide popularisation of the sport came about in the 1960's with the introduction of lighter, cheaper and more readily available surfboards and wetsuits. Several Hollywood movies featured the sport although most of the surfing in them was faked, the actors standing in front of images of the ocean whilst pretending to ride a surfboard. Most importantly at this time bands such as the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean and others spread the word about surfing worldwide through their music.

Harry Potter Pembrokeshire

At Pembrokeshire & West Wales' Premier Surf School we offer a full range of surfing lessons and equipment hire, from a half day tuition to week long courses, Kids' Surf Clubs, surf camps and more. The surf courses are run at Newgale Pembrokeshire, Broadhaven, Freshwater West and Manorbier.

Outer Reef also runs BSA Instructor Courses, as well as NaRS, SLSA Beach LifeGuard awards and is The official Welsh' Training Centre for the British Surfing Association (BSA). .

Our Instructors have over 30 years surfing experience between them, as well as 25 years coaching watersports to all ages and abilities.

Freshwater West, the beach from which we run our courses, has a new building - the magical Shell Cottage, which will appear in the final Harry Potter film, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'...

Beachcombers were mystified when a small cottage made from old stone and sea shells sprung up on the dunes of Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire.

Little did they know there were looking at a house which is about to be immortalised on the silver screen for the final film in the meteorically successful Harry Potter franchise.

Filming at Shell Cottage, which features in chapter 25 of the seventh novel, will take place between May 11th and May 15th and will see author JK Rowling's famous characters come to life in Wales. Stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson - who play Harry, Ron and Hermione - will spend several days filming at the cottage.

Skinner and O'Donnell Win 2009 ASP LQS 1-Star Goanna Pro Tapia

TAPIA DE CASARIEGO, Spain (Saturday, April 11, 2009) - The first and crucial event of the ASP European Longboard Tour came to an end today, British surfers Ben Skinner (GBR) and Candice O’Donnell (GBR) dominating the LQS 1-Star Goanna Pro Tapia in consistent wind-blown five foot waves. Both event winners and runner-ups have secured their Oxbow World Longboard Tour (WLT) tickets and will represent Europe on the elite longboard tour along with Europe’s leaders Antoine Delpero (FRA) and Romain Maurin (FRA).
Ben Skinner (GBR), longtime top European longboarder, defeated inform Frenchman Alexis Deniel (FRA) in the final confirming his standout status through the event posting both highest wave score and heat result in the 30-minute decider. The British surfer finished the 2009 edition with an unstoppable 18.37 point tally (out of a possible 20). Skinner, who decided to make the trip to Tapia less than a week before the event started, leaves Northern Spain with the precious ticket for the Oxbow WLT, his main goal in the Goanna Pro Tapia.
"It is just perfect to end up the event with a win," Skinner said. "I came here with a big result in mind and to win and get that qualification for the WLT is what I wanted most. I was feeling great with that new board and surfed as good as I could every day. I am going to celebrate that great event."
The women’s division saw other British Candice O’Donnell (GBR) take the best over Netherlands’ Renate Moerman (NDL), both competitors getting their qualification into the Roxy Women’s World Longboard Championships (WWLC). O’Donnell, who was surfing for the first time in a couple of years in an ASP sanctioned event, went through the trials’ heat then bested favourite Estitxu Estremo (EUK) before making the most out of the conditions during the final.
"I am so happy to get the title after coming all the way down from Great Britain," O’Donnell said. "We had waves everyday and it was great fun to surf in the event. I had a great time and it’s a shame there wasn’t more competitors but I am definitely satisfied with that result."

Surfing Wales & Pembrokeshire

Wales & Pembrokehire - the heart of surf action!

Even in a destination with as much great surf as Wales & Pembrokeshire, there has to be one place better than the rest. There is.... and that's why Outer Reef Surf School is based here in the heart of the action.

Wales & Pembrokeshire has some epic waves but talk to anyone who's surfed this region and they'll tell you this stretch of coastline boasts a high density of uncrowded, quality waves that work in a variety of conditions.

Outer Reef Surf School is in a prime location in Wales, so whether the surf is small or big, just a short drive north or south we’ll get you to where the waves are happening. This means that there is almost always somewhere to surf, whatever your ability be it mellow beach breaks… heavy hollow reef breaks or rolling point breaks… you choose. Our surf crew will advise you on were the best surf is for you ability on the day.

Manorbier Bay

South West facing, this small bay has been known to produce some classic day's surf.

It's a beach break with a right hand reef break on the right hand side of the bay. It's more sheltered than other SW facing beaches at high tide because of the cliffs on either side of the bay so can be worth a look when other spots are big and blown out.

It generally works best on the dropping tide. It can close out at low tide.

There's a lovely neolithic tomb up on the cliff side to the left hand side of the bay and behind you a beautiful Norman castle, so take a look around while you're here!

Freshwater West
Besides the main beach breaks, Fresh West has some classic reef breaks which on their day, can rival anywhere in the world! If you're inexperienced, leave the rocks to the pros and stick to sand.

The Point (or The Gap) is a consistently good spot and found to the left of the main beach. A strong rip operates here on the dropping tide. It has great right hander at low tide when the wind is light .

Further left is Middle Bay.This can be good at all stages of the tide depending on the amount of sand that has been washed into the bay but generally best on the push. At high tide on a big swell it's particularly good as there's a good right hander that breaks into a deep channel. Its a relatively easy paddle out amongst the rocks at the base of the cliff.

The reef tends to magnify the wave size to maximise conditions. It's not a beginners wave as the waves become pretty fast and steep here as the tide changes various parts of the reef are exposed. Getting back in can be a little tricky.

Other spots can be found in vaccinity but require some exploration. The infamous 'Pole', which has been well documented in many of the top European surf mags. This can be accessed by boat or a long paddle if you know where to look.

Take heed though, this is for pros or kamikazzees only and is a seriously shallow reef break with gaping tubes on the right day. If you snap a leash or your board out there, its a long swim in and you're on your own...

Broadhaven South
This favoured big wave spot is a truly hideous wave which often comes in at acute angles to the beach.

It tends to work best in winter but autumn and spring can also produce good waves. Waves re-bound off the cliffs on the left hand side of the beach to form giant wedges which are practically impossible to duckdive so time your paddle out after each ride.

The lip here is very thick and heavy and will undoubtedly flatten you at some point!

It produces lovely looking barrels, predominantly lefts so it's perfect for goofy footers.

If you can't stand up immediately and drop into a vaccumous pit then surf somewhere else! The takeoff is frighteningly quick for standups and the wedges often contort into all manner of shapes as you drop down the wave face.

Newgale
At high tide the surf is generally swallowed up as the water pushes up onto a steep pebble bank. The surf is normally a tad bigger than at Whitesands, a little further up the coast. It faces a similar direction to Freshwater West but is a lot smaller and never as gnarly. If Freshwater West is out of your league then head over to Newgale for a more manageable session. At low tide it closes out - so time your surf accordingly. Newgale is more of a slow moveing wave and good for longboarding.

Seasons
Great waves all year round....
Pembrokeshire offers great surfing year round. Be warned though....winter is best experienced in a 5/4mm wetsuit!
Spring

Recommended: 4/3 or a good 3/2 with liquid seams

Coaching Education, Training and lifelong Learning..

Welcome to Outer Reef Surf Schools Coach Education, Training and Lifelong Learning..
What we want to do:
To recruit, train and retain sports coaches in a wide range of sporting options
Why we want to achieve this:
Sports coaches, PE teachers, leaders and volunteers are pivotal to the success of any sports development initiative. For individuals to reach their full sporting potential it is essential to access high quality coaching that ensures safe, enjoyable and progressive sporting experiences for young people. If we are to encourage lifelong participation in sport then it is crucial that a child’s first experience of playing sport is a positive one. Outer Reef Surf School aims to do this through implementing a comprehensive coach education programme.
How we will achieve this:
By delivering and promoting an annual programme of coach education, training and lifelong learning opportunities for coaches, teachers, leaders, volunteers, students and parents.
By providing pathways for coaches and volunteers to develop their skills.
By promoting coaching and coach development opportunities through a range of initiatives to raise the profile of coaching.
By supporting the development of new coaches and sports leaders by enhancing links with schools and local sports clubs.
By actively recruiting potential coaches, volunteers and officials into sport.
Through raising the profile of volunteering in sport in Pembrokeshire.
By providing an information and advisory role to partners regarding training, coach education, and lifelong learning opportunities.

‘Individuals develop and grow by identifying and meeting challenges. Sport and physical activity can play an important part in personal and social development.’

Pembokeshire Leisure Swim Surf Scheme Information
Pembrokeshire Leisure has teamed up with Outer Reef Surf School to bring you the Summer Swim Surf Programme.

This was the first scheme of its kind in Wales linked to the National Assembly for Wales Free Swimming Programme.
.
Beginner courses
Pembrokeshire Leisure
Swim Surf Scheme The Day’s Activities was a great success!

The morning session was based in the swimming pool where our fully qualified British
Surfing Association Instructors and Beach lifeguards will run the children through the first
stages of learning how to surf, introducing them to the equipment, how to ride a surfboard
and catch waves, before heading to the beach for an afternoon’s experience to remember.
Safety is the key factor and the children were taken through beach and sea safety and
awareness of their surroundings, whilst at the sometime they have a great time
and learn a lot about the natural environment. The children were taken through the BSA Young
Junior Athletes Surf Scheme which has five levels(from day 1 beginner through to competition level). The scheme is mainly practical but does include
some theory such as teaching the children about wave prediction, tides, water safety etc.
All you needed to bring was a swimming costume and a towel, all the equipment was provided by Outer Reef Surf School.

The Swim Surf Days took place on the Pembrokeshire Coast:

Newgale, Broadhaven, Freshwater West, Manorbier & Whitsands Beach

Dean has been teaching surfing for the past 16 years and
has surfed in many competitions. He and his team of instructors that are all fully
qualified BSA surf coaches and beach lifeguards.

Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said the youngsters had
thoroughly enjoyed the sessions.

“They have been a wonderful introduction to a sport, which is both fun and which
plays an increasingly important role in the local economy,” he said.
“Pembrokeshire Leisure is to be applauded for developing such an innovative
scheme.”
Dean Gough & the Outer Reef surf school were delighted to have played a part in the
initiative. “he said.”30th

West Wales' Premier Surf Club

WEST WALES' Premier Surf Club
The club has been organised by the sport
development division of Pembrokeshire County Council and Dean Gough from Outer Reef Surf School. Professional tuition will be provided by the Outer Reef Surf Centre instructors, who are fully qualified B.S.A coaches.
During the surf club sessions, the young people will be taken through the 'Young Athletes Junior Surf Scheme' which has been designed and developed by The British Surfing Association. There will be fun competitions as well as fitness, skill development, and safety and ocean awareness.
If any other schools are interested in their pupils taking part in this scheme, please contact Dean Gough on 01646 680070. These courses are ideal for our younger future surfers, aged 7-17.
The scheme includes a BSA Young Athlete log book and certificates for achieving each level and a surf club hoody and other goody donated by our spongers. The coaches will tick off your logbook which outlines your surfing achievements at the end of the surf lesson and at the end of your course, your Surf coach will award participants with your National Surfing Award (level 1-5).
The Young Athlete Surf Scheme is an ongoing scheme, so in future lesson at any BSA surf school your coach can use the logbook to gage your present level and take you through the next stages of the surfing development scheme.

Surf's Up For School

Two school Surf Clubs, from Outer Reef surf school, got together earlier this month to celebrate their success.
The 5x60 Surf Clubs at Greenhill and Pembroke met up at the Tenby school for a joint presentation evening.
Over the last two terms, 130 pupils from the two schools have taken part in a six week after-school junior surf programme run in conjunction with the Outer reef surf school.
Organized by Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - the 5x60 project aims to encourage more secondary school children to take part in extra-curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.

Ready to hit the water - youngsters on the surfing course
Pembrokeshire youngsters took to their surfboards this summer thanks to a new
initiative from Pembrokeshire Leisure.
The leisure arm of Pembrokeshire County Council teamed up with OuterReef
Surf School to provide free surfing lessons for children as a development of the
Welsh Assembly Government’s (WAG) free swimming scheme.
Each Wednesday for five weeks groups of young people from across the County
enjoyed a day’s fun and learning in the pool and on the beach.
The youngsters spent the mornings in their local swimming pool learning the
basics and getting used to surfing equipment.
Buses were then on hand to take them to a suitable beach after lunch to try their
hand at the real thing.
After an introductory talk on water safety, catching waves and controlling the
board from Dean Gough owner of OuterReef Surf School
- the youngsters took to the water.
Dean has been teaching surfing for the past 15 years and
has surfed in many competitions. He and his team of instructors are all fully
qualified BSA surf coaches and beach lifeguards.
Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said the youngsters had
thoroughly enjoyed the sessions.
“They have been a wonderful introduction to a sport, which is both fun and which
plays an increasingly important role in the local economy,” he said.
“Pembrokeshire Leisure is to be applauded for developing such an innovative
scheme.”
Dean Gough said the surf school was delighted to have been part of the
scheme.
“ it was even more popular than we hoped,” he said.
